I LOVE RED. LOVE. RED. If you know me personally, or if you’ve seen me at events, you would have most likely also met my best friend. My darling 5-inch solid red pumps. And yes, they’re my favourite (the pain wears off eventually). Red has always been a colour that makes me feel energized and confident. Needless to say, The Colour Series this week is a very exciting one for me!
Red.
Strength, Energy, Passion & Lust
According to BBC’s ‘How the colour red warps the mind’ by David Robson, he speaks about how red is a strongly manipulative colour- a colour that can change our minds and bodies without us even knowing it. Wearing the colour red itself has strong effects on changing our moods, perception and actions. In sports, wearing the colour red can be a factor in tipping the scale at an even match. The colour red intimidates the mind therefore lowering the level of testosterone and making the individual feel less dominant.
The eye naturally gravitates to the colour red. It is the strongest and longest wavelength of light and the highest arc of the rainbow.
Red gives you energy
It makes you more energetic, your heart beats faster and drives up your confidence. It is a colour that stimulates. So it’s no surprise that women feel sexier in a red dress. If you compare the same woman in identical settings, with the only difference being the colour of the dress she wore, you would find her in a red dress more appealing and noticeable.
In a cultural setting, Chinese New Year is filled with red packets being given out as a sign of good luck and prosperity.
A fun fact is that red cars are perceived to move faster and appear closer compared to cars of other colours. Apparently red cars get more speeding tickets too!
Red for love, or lust?
Red as opposed to pink is more associated to feelings of lust, sex and attraction whereas pink (a more subtle and lighter shade of red) represents love.
The colour Red is not all fun, sex and games though. Too much of the colour red increases feelings of aggression and reduces analytical thinking according to Amy Morin on Forbes.com. Red also makes it hard to concentrate. Studying in a room painted red? Probabblllyyyy not the smartest thing to do.
So ladies and gents, lesson of the day- want to stand out? Be bold with Red.
