Can you believe it is almost May? Time has really flown by despite having to social distance the past month and a half. With Mother’s Day coming up, I’ve been racking my brain for ideas to make Mother’s Day special for my mum, even if we need to be at home.
Mother’s Day may be the first “holiday” that many of us are experiencing since this has all started and there are a ton of fun ideas to keep the celebrations going at home!
I’ve seen some creative social distancing birthday ideas lately like birthday parades, Netflix watch party movie nights and more, so I want to get just as creative for Mother’s Day.
Here are some fun ideas to make Mother’s Day special while staying home:
Give mom a much needed break!
While this isn’t a new idea, it is just as effective even when you need to spend Mother’s Day at home. Because my family is at home, there are so many more dishes, laundry, and dust in general since we are using the kitchen and living room more. My mom always has this need to non-stop clean and while we love her for it and help out, she still deserves a break!
On Mother’s Day, make or order her favourite breakfast and have it all set up before she wakes up. If she’s anything like my mom, you’ll be up early.
Here are some easy brunch recipes to make:
Have breakfast/brunch together and be sure to shower her with love! You can cater her day to what your mom’s love language is! Is it gifts, words of affirmation, touch?
Whatever it is, be sure to shower her with love! My mom has been on a Korean drama binge lately so I plan to give her even more time to catch up on her dramas! DIY Spa Day for Mom!
Since you can’t treat your mom to a relaxing day at the spa, why not bring the spa to her?
There are lots of local health and wellness companies that have DIY spa kits that you can order and ship directly to your home. You can also throw in a DIY manicure!
Not only is it a great way to support a local business, but it also gives you everything you need to create spa vibes while you spend Mother’s Day from home.
I share a step by step guide on how to create a spa day in my social distancing post if you want it to take it the extra mile!
Use Technology to Connect or Bring Back Memories
For those of you who don’t live with your mom, it can be kind of hard to feel like you are celebrating her special day. Thanks to technology, there are ways we can stay connected, even if we have to be apart!
Schedule a Zoom Call or HouseParty with all your loved ones together and surprise her with something special like having everyone on the call make a poster of reasons why they love her! Drop off a mimosa kit before your Zoom call at her doorstep and have everyone do a virtual cheers with her on her special day.
Did you know that you can make Zoom Virtual Backgrounds on Canva for free? I just found out and this is another way to personalized your zoom calls!

Another idea: You can collect family photos and memories to create a customized slideshow or digital album that you can share with her easily through a website link! It may not be the same as having the photos to look at together in person, but it’s the thought that counts and it is still something she can treasure forever.
Mother’s Day Movie Night – via Netflix Party!
If you love taking your mom to the movies, host a Netflix party or home movie night with the family! Pop up some fresh popcorn and grab her favourite snacks for the occasion. You can even create a concession stand menu and DIY movie tickets to share with her.
If you’re looking for some movie ideas, here is my Mother’s Day Movie Checklist! No guarantees these movies aren’t feel good tear-jerkers so bring those tissues! Tag me in your IG stories if you do save + fill this checklist out!
Staying in for Dinner Doesn’t Have to be Boring
My family loves to dine out! We have a Mother’s Day tradition of bringing my mom to try a new restaurant every year. Unfortunately, all restaurants are currently take-out only but this doesn’t mean you can’t bring the restaurant atmosphere to her while you spend Mother’s Day at home.
Pick her favourite or even a restaurant you’ve all been meaning to try and order take out from there. While it’s great to cook at home, Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to do something a little different and support your local restaurants.
Since you can’t be there physically, set up your dining room table with candles, full place settings and even print out a menu to give her that restaurant experience. Have your siblings, dad or other family members join in on the fun by asking everyone to dress up and serve your mom just like you’d have it normally.
Not only will it be a sweet memory, but it also brightens everyone’s spirit when you get to dress up! Throw in some booze to go with dinner too!
Don’t Forget Dessert
And of course, don’t forget dessert!
Order in advance from your go-to bakery and give your mom a delicious treat to cap off the night. A lot of bakeries are doing contactless pickup where all you have to do is run in and pay in advance or with card. Or bake your own- my sister bakes so it’s easy peasy for us.
Online Shopping is the Way To Go
With most malls closed, online shopping has become the norm for buying gifts and ordering new clothes. Since you still have a bit of time, order the gift online to arrive before Mother’s Day. Amazon Prime has been pretty good with this so far despite it saying it has a longer wait period.

Cozy Robe and PJ Set
If we are going to be lounging all day at home, your mom can social distance in comfort and style! A cute matching PJ Set, cozy robe and maybe even some fuzzy slippers are all great ideas.
Barista At Home
If your mom loves coffee and she hasn’t been able to hit up her favourite coffee shops lately, bring the cafe to her! You can purchase milk frothers online (I love my Nespresso Aeroccino)! Or there are a ton of coffee machines to get depending on your budget. My favourite involves Nespresso (as you’d know from my IG Stories).
Plants, or an at home garden
Any plant lovers here?
There’s an upsurge of in-home gardens for planting vegetables lately. Chapters has very cute mini gardening kits to make things easy and fun to do at home!
Air Fryer
I know this sounds weird, but my mom LOVES appliances. She loves being able to try new recipes and many times she doesn’t have the right supplies for them. My mom has been wanting an air fryer for a long time so she can make “healthy” chips and fries. It’s a win win for everyone! Pair it with a new cookbook and you’re golden.
A New Outdoor Beach/Lounge Chair
One thing I’ve been doing a lot while social distancing is enjoying the sunshine in my backyard and front yard. I grab my favourite book and read outside while I soak in the Vitamin D. It’s great for your mental health and it’s been forcing me to read the books I’ve been putting off. How about getting a patio table + chair set online for your mom? I know Wayfair and Walmart has a couple affordable options.
Last but not least, to all the moms, mom-to-bes, new moms out there!
You are loved and should spend this day giving yourself a pat on the back for being an incredible force! Treat yourself to a bubble bath, relish in the day and appreciate you for everything you do!

I hope this sparks a few ideas to make Mother’s Day special while social distancing. I know it’s a difficult time right now but we can still do our best to spread some positivity where we can!
