Summer left this year just as quickly as it came. It’s officially Fall! The rainy weather, cozy sweaters and Fall flavoured drinks are just a few of my favourite things about this season.
My next favourite thing? Fall fashion!
There’s something about the crispness of the air, the art of layering and Fall tones that make me feel like a pumpkin spice latte—delicious and warm! Fall is the perfect in-between for cozy winter looks and light summer pieces. It allows you to use so many different parts of your closet (even the parts you feel like you never wear), and as always, there are a couple essentials that should live in your seasonal rotation.
Looking back to 7-8 years ago when I first came to Canada, I was a style newbie and needless to say, my Fall style was el-terrible. So honestly, I have alot more fun putting fall styles together now.
Here are 5 pieces you need to have in your Fall wardrobe:
A Stylish and Comfy Pair of Ankle Boots
Ankle boots have been a trend for a number of years now and it’s not going away anytime soon. They are so versatile and can be dressed up or down easily, plus they come in multiple colours that can complement any style.
I’ve been seeing the popular Prada chunky boots, and the Chloe Rainboots everywhere but if you don’t want to spend a couple hundred on shoes, there are many options or dupes of the same design at Zara, H&M and online.
In terms of colours, I’d suggest going with the staple everyday colours like black or brown if you want more wear for your money. I also own some funky looking boots for days I want to stand out. So, feel free to mix and match in your closet.
It’s the perfect piece for Fall because you can literally pair it with everything—from dresses to leggings. The ultimate staple in your Fall wardrobe.
A Great Addition for a Feminine Flair – Midi Dresses and Skirts
While shorter summer dresses are a staple for those warm months, I love having a go-to fall dress or skirt that I can dress up for date night or a day in the city (within our small circles of course). If you’re looking for a nearby date night idea, Abbotsford has some amazing wine tasting and pumpkin patches to visit.
I love a good midi dress or skirt that falls just below the knees. As of now, one of my favourite dresses is my long burgundy dress from COS that I got last year. It’s so comfy and cosy, and warm!
Find a dress or skirt that doesn’t feel too formal but can still be paired with boots or heels to create that Fall look.
I’ve been having alot of fun with Pinterest and creating my Fall Mood Board for style, and the general aesthetic I’m going for this season. You can find my board HERE.
My favourite fall dresses are usually a mix of neutral colours like brown, black, beige and white. These colours are easier to style with, and wear casually. I’m a big accessories gal, and so layering is my go-to to level up a look.
On the flipside, if you follow me on IG, I also LOVE some statement pieces and those are usually of brighter colours. Have fun with it!
Essential Knits—Chunky Turtleneck Sweaters and Knitted Long Cardigans
Sweater weather! Who doesn’t love a cozy fall sweater you can just snuggle up in.
In the past, I’ve made mistakes of buying sweaters that look good but are itchy (interior is usually not the best fabric). I find that comfort is definitely key when it comes to cost per wear because I normally reach for the pieces that feel soft and doesn’t irritate my skin.
While knits always make a comeback during the colder months, I try to invest in good quality knits that will last me years. I used to buy cheaper knits that end up unraveling or pilling quickly. This makes it hard to wear and very prone to those little fluffies. It’s much easier to get a solid, good quality piece that becomes your effortless Fall look.
My favourite way of pairing knits for fall is by wearing them with leather pants and on top of a slip dress. My favourite slip dresses still get the use outside of Summer, and is SUPER CUTE when paired with boots. Slip dresses are a great way to mix 90’s fashion into your Fall looks. The 90’s are definitely still in style.
Also, soft cardigans are my GO-TO this season. The softer, the better. It’s the perfect piece when transitioning from Summer to Fall, and easy to carry along from day to night. My favourite ones are from EverNew—which has a thicker fabric and H&M.
It’s all about the Leather, Leather, Leather
Leather was HUGE last Fall, and if you’ve been browsing around, you’d be able to see that it is indeed back!
Leather jackets, leather pants, leather skirts, leather dresses—I’m all for it!
A tip when shopping for leather, be wary of the sizing as sometimes, it does stretch a tad. I also like to go with items that fit just right and doesn’t feel snug, The reason being is that I’m not a fan of when it feels like it’s sticking to your body too much.
Shackets are IN this Fall
I had to google what Shackets meant- it’s the Shirt Jackets, and I am here for them!
I’ve been wearing mine almost everyday because it’s SO comfortable and stylish to pair. I’ve recently paired it mainly with pants but I can definitely see this with skirts as well.
If you’re looking for a piece to add in your Fall Wardrobe, this is the one! I’ve seen many ranging from neutral colours, to plaid designs.
Bonus: Fall Photoshoot Locations and Tips
Don’t go overboard with the makeup and look
The biggest mistake for a photoshoot day is overthinking your look and makeup. Trust me, I still fall into this.
I remember when I first started shooting outside, I would go full glam with my look, and honestly photograph items that I may not necessarily even wear out.
It actually made my photoshoots much more stressful and I found I didn’t feel comfortable at all.
For Fall, I have fully embraced that style and practicality go hand in hand. You can look super stylish and yet be comfortable at the same time. Pick those staples in your Fall wardrobe this year that make you feel GOOD. Do your makeup like you normally would for a nice day out! You don’t need to go crazy, just feel good in your own skin.
Location, Location, Location
Fall is very aesthetic and there are so many amazing locations to get that perfect fall gram.
My favourites are:
- The Pumpkin Patch
- Stanley Park when the leaves are changing
- Spirit Bear Park with tall trees and green foliage
- Anywhere near a waterfront
- A mountain viewpoint where you can get the colour changing leaves in the background
- Cute, local streets with unique storefronts
Changing leaves are beautiful backdrops to any fall photoshoot! If you’re looking for a few local spots in Vancouver, I shared a few of my favourite places in this post.
I hope this gives you some wardrobe inspiration this Fall.
Don’t forget to tag me on Instagram if you decide to have your own little photoshoot this season. I can’t wait to get some inspiration for looks and photo ideas from all of you.
