We all have those days. You know, when you just get stuck on a project no matter how hard you try or get that major writers’ block. I definitely get into a creative rut sometimes where I don’t feel inspired at all for content. With the current situation of social distancing, you may feel even more stuck creatively. I know a lot of us are working from home for the next little while and it’s a big adjustment.
Digging yourself out of this hole can feel impossible once but there are ways to give you that little boost even when we’re all stuck inside.
Here are my 3 tips to get out of a creative rut:
Go Outside or Take a Step Back
One of the best ways to get inspired is to change up your environment.
Leave that desk and get outside!
Right now, we can’t sit in at our favourite coffee shops to soak up the sun but we can still safely take a walk outdoors, as long as it’s 6 feet away from other people. If you have a patio or backyard, I strongly recommend that instead. Giving yourself some time to take a breath of fresh air can work wonders for your mental health and creativity. A piece of info I learned recently, being around nature can reduce stress levels in 15 minutes or less.
It’s also important to take the time to unplug from social media and give yourself a break. Getting your eyes and mind away from the screen can help to spark a new idea. Plus, the news and social currently is saturated with news that doesn’t really lift spirits. Hello, break much needed.
Through the workday at home, I set phone alarm reminders to take stretch breaks, do a quick 15-minute workout and take a look out the window. Sometimes I’ll even switch gears to a different project or something completely unrelated like making TikTok videos haha.
Taking a step back can give you a new perspective, rest your brain and help you get out of that creative rut.
Put All Your Ideas on Paper
Sometimes the issue isn’t no ideas, but so many ideas I can’t quite explain or understand.
Do you ever have those moments when you just have a collage of thoughts that won’t quite quiet down?
In those moments, I like to do a big word vomit in writing. I take a blank sheet of paper and write down everything that comes to mind – all those ideas, worries, everything. Even if it’s an unfinished idea that happens to pop in, I’ll scribble it onto the page.
This is a great way to create content and it’s one way that helped me start my blog initially.
At the end of your thought vomit sesh, the page may look a little intimidating at first glance but there is gold hidden somewhere there.
Doing a big word dump allows me to clear my mind and ground my thoughts so I can focus on which great idea I want to expand on.

Find Brilliant People to Connect With
I get my best ideas and inspiration from those around me.
I truly believe in surrounding yourself with incredible people that make your heart feel full. My friends and I always have great conversations and after having a good girl talk with them I come out feeling inspired.
During this time of social distancing, we can feel very disconnected from our community. To combat that, I’ve made more time connecting with friends on Zoom. There’s a funny meme going around saying that Zoom is the culprit behind Covid-19 LOL.
Don’t forget, just because we can’t connect physically, doesn’t mean we can’t connect at all. Technology allows us to stay connected in different ways so take advantage of it! If anything, keeping those social connections make working remote much easier.
Of course once this virus ends (hopefully soon) you can take these online connections offline. Make sure you stay in touch and offer to grab coffee later. There is nothing like a good in person chat to get your creative juices flowing.

I hope this helps you get out of that creative rut that you might be feeling, especially during this time. It happens to the best of us but know I’m rooting for you!
